The University of Washington: Facilities Services

UW Recycling and UW Solid Waste

Food Waste Composting

UW Recycling began collecting food waste for composting in Spring 2004. Working closely with campus food service facilities, the program successfully diverted more than 241 tons of compostable food waste and food packaging in fiscal year 2006/07. There are currently more than 50 locations that have toters for the collection of food waste. All food service facilities and coffee shops on campus are taking part in the program.

Food Waste Toters

food waste toters

Food waste toters are typically located in loading areas or behind buildings. If your building doesn't have a toter, contact UW Recycling at recycle@u.washington.edu.

Only approved biodegradable, vegetable-based bags can go into the toters. Do not put plastic bags in the toters.

Toters are serviced by Cedar Grove Composting, the University's contracted vendor.

To request a food waste toter for a special event, fill out the online form.

Kitchen/Breakroom Composting

To establish food waste collection in your breakroom or kitchen, purchase the container of your choice. Suggestions are listed below. You can choose to line your compost pail with a biodegradable bag; see below for some ordering information. Remember that this is a voluntary program; staff are responsible for emptying their food waste into a toter.

If there is a food waste toter at your building, it is on a service schedule and you can immediately begin emptying your collected food waste into it. If your building does not have a food waste toter, contact UW Recycling at recycle@u.washington.edu.
